How do people in Sharjah stay fit?
Fitness in Sharjah is shaped by three things: a lagoon at the heart of the city, an inland summer that runs hotter than Dubai’s, and a weekday drive across the border that swallows the evening. People who keep going here tend to run Khalid Lagoon in winter, lift in a mall gym or a ladies-only floor in summer, and train at dawn or at the weekend rather than after work.
The emirate is the UAE’s third largest, at 2,590 sq km, and the Sharjah Census 2022 counted about 1.8 million residents, according to the UAE government portal. Most live in the city’s dense districts. Wikipedia’s district figures put Al Nahda at about 63,500 people per square km, so outdoor space close to home is precious, and much of the training happens indoors.
Where can you run in Sharjah, and how far is each route?
Sharjah’s signature run is the Buhaira Corniche around Khalid Lagoon, which the Sharjah Buhaira Striders running club describes as about 6.5 km, mostly paved, with stretches of grass, sand and newer soft running track. Shorter tracks with fixed distances sit in Al Majaz, beside Sharjah National Park and at Wasit Wetlands.
| Route | Distance | Surface and extras | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buhaira Corniche, round Khalid Lagoon | About 6.5 km | Mostly paved, some grass, sand and soft track | Sharjah Buhaira Striders |
| Al Majaz Waterfront jogging track | 750 m | Partly recycled tyres, slightly cushioned | Property Finder, October 2025 |
| Al Qarayen tracks, behind Sharjah National Park | 2.2 km | Walking and cycling, four outdoor gym areas | Glimpses of UAE |
| Wasit jogging track, beside Wasit Wetlands | 1,600 m | Outdoor gym halfway round | Glimpses of UAE |
| Al Hamriya Beach rubber track | 1.3 km | Rubber surface | Property Finder, October 2025 |
| Kalba Beach Corniche, east coast | 7.6 km, 4 m wide | Flat, well lit, by the sea | Property Finder, October 2025 |
For laps, Al Majaz Waterfront is the easiest: four times round the 750 m track is 3 km, and the lagoon loop is there when you want distance. Sharjah National Park, near the airport on Al Dhaid Road, covers 63 hectares with football, handball and basketball courts. Glimpses of UAE lists entry at AED 2 and notes that cycling isn’t allowed on its paths. Al Noor Island, a 45,470 square metre garden island in Khalid Lagoon reached by a pedestrian bridge from Al Noor Mosque, suits a slow recovery walk; adult entry is AED 35.
What is Sharjah’s weather like for training, season by season?
Sharjah is hotter in summer than coastal Dubai. The averages for Sharjah International Airport put the July and August high at 42.9°C, against 40.6°C and 40.4°C at Dubai in the WMO’s figures, and Sharjah’s record is 49.0°C. Winter is the reward: January averages a 24.8°C high and a 12.8°C low. The year brings about 94 mm of rain, most of it between December and March.
| Months | Average high / low | Outdoors | Indoors |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | 24.8–26.9°C / 12.8–14.5°C | Any time of day: lagoon runs, park circuits | Two coached strength sessions a week |
| March and April | 29.6–34.9°C / 16.3–19.7°C | Mornings and late afternoons | Build strength before summer |
| May to September | 39.7–42.9°C / 23.7–29.2°C | Dawn only, short and easy | All strength and interval work |
| October and November | 31.4–36.9°C / 18.1–22.2°C | Back to early-morning runs | Keep the routine as runs return |
Humidity matters as much as heat. The same records show average humidity of 69% in December and January, and 59% across the year. Nights stay near 29°C in July and August, so even a 5 AM run is warm. In summer, carry water on every run, keep it under 40 minutes, and move intervals and strength work into an air-conditioned room.
How does the Dubai commute shape a Sharjah fitness routine?
For Sharjah residents who work in Dubai, the commute decides when training happens. Three highways link the two cities: Al Ittihad Road (E11), Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) and Emirates Road (E611). Sharjah’s transport authority also runs intercity buses to Dubai. Al Majaz Waterfront is only 14 km from Dubai International Airport, but the rush hour makes that distance meaningless.
Your weekend depends on who you work for. Sharjah government staff work four days, Monday to Thursday, from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and the emirate’s official weekend is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to the UAE government portal. Federal staff work 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM Monday to Thursday and 7:30 AM to 12 PM on Friday, with Saturday and Sunday off. Many households mix both, so plan training around the shorter schedule.
- Commuting to Dubai: train at 5 AM, before the roads fill, and keep the weekend for longer runs.
- On the Sharjah government week: a 3:45 PM session after work, and Friday and Sunday mornings free for the lagoon.
- On the federal week: Friday afternoon, from 12:30 PM, is yours before the weekend begins.
- Students in University City: the campus area is close to the airport and the National Park, and a 2 PM gap between lectures fits a session.
What should you wear to exercise outdoors in Sharjah?
Sharjah’s decency rules, issued by the Ruler in June 2001, apply to sportswear in public too. Khaleej Times summarises them: for men, very short shorts in public or commercial places and a bare chest count as indecent; for women, clothing that exposes the stomach or back, hemlines above the knee, and tight or see-through clothing. On beaches, swimmers should wear conservative swimwear, and swimwear isn’t allowed on streets or in public places.
In practice, knee-length shorts or full leggings with a T-shirt are fine on the Buhaira Corniche and Al Majaz Waterfront. Police generally start with a warning, but there is no reason to test it. At home, or on a ladies-only floor, train in whatever you like.
Where can women exercise in Sharjah?
Women in Sharjah can train in fully separate spaces, and the decency rules back that up by barring men from places marked “Ladies Only”. GymNation runs a fully separate ladies’ gym, with its own entrance and female trainers, at each of its three Sharjah locations: City Centre Al Zahia, Mega Mall and Sharjah Central Mall. All are open 24 hours.
- Green Belt Ladies Park: a paved walking path, with entry by membership card, issued on an Emirates ID, per Glimpses of UAE.
- Al Aqeeq Ladies Sports Centre: listed in Al Majaz on the Salonist gym directory.
- GymNation ladies’ gyms: Core membership was AED 209 a month on 28 October 2026, with a free starter personal training session.
Which fitness events can Sharjah residents join in 2026?
The biggest event within reach of Sharjah is across the border. The Dubai Fitness Challenge runs from 31 October to 29 November 2026, Gulf News reports, with free registration for residents and visitors. Dubai Ride is on 1 November, and Dubai Run, along Sheikh Zayed Road and through Downtown Dubai, is on 22 November. Plan the drive from Sharjah the night before, because the start is a long way from Al Majaz on a weekend morning.
Closer to home, the weekly Buhaira Striders run on Saturday at 6 AM is the steadiest fixture. In Al Zahia, Dubizzle lists a HYROX Sharjah training club alongside GymNation, whose Signature membership, at AED 399 a month, includes HYROX classes. If you sign up for the Dubai Run with under four weeks to go, aim to walk-run it, add two or three easy runs a week, and keep two strength sessions so your legs cope with the road.
A training week for a Sharjah commuter
- 1
Monday, 5 AM: strength at home
A 45-minute coached session in the flat: squats, presses, rows and core, done before the drive.
- 2
Wednesday, 5 AM: strength again
Same pattern, heavier, or at the building gym if your tower has one.
- 3
Thursday, at work: walk
Park further from the office or take the stairs. In summer, a lap of the mall at lunch counts.
- 4
Friday, 8 AM: coached session
A longer session while the family sleeps in on the first day of the Sharjah weekend.
- 5
Saturday, 6 AM: lagoon run
Join the Buhaira Striders for the 6.5 km loop from November to March, or a treadmill run in summer.
- 6
Sunday: recovery
A slow walk round Al Noor Island or Sharjah National Park, and an early night before the week.
How do you keep training through a Sharjah summer and Ramadan?
From May to September, when highs stay above 39°C, move almost everything indoors and treat outdoor runs as optional extras at dawn. Mall gyms such as GymNation Mega Mall and Sharjah Central are open around the clock, and a living room with a mat is enough for a coached session. If you travel in July or August, pick a plan you can follow from a hotel room.
In Ramadan, the UAE government portal advises against hard exertion while fasting, and working hours fall by two hours a day. Keep sessions short and light in the hour before iftar, or train after iftar once you have eaten and rested. Ramadan arrives about 11 days earlier each year, and its start follows the official moon-sighting announcement, so set your plan once the date is confirmed.
Is online personal training a good fit for Sharjah life?
For many Sharjah residents, yes. Live online coaching removes the two things that break routines here: the drive and the heat. MakeMyFitness sessions are live video calls in which a certified coach watches you, corrects your form and adapts the plan to your space. Slots run from 4:30 AM to 6:30 PM UAE time, because our coaches are in India, 90 minutes ahead. Sessions can be moved with 24 hours’ notice.
| Program | One session | 4-week plan (12 sessions) | Per session on the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Gym Training1:1, 45 minutes | AED 92 | AED 818 | about AED 68 |
| Personal Home Training1:1, 45 minutes | AED 104 | AED 935 | about AED 78 |
| Rehab & Recovery1:1, once a doctor or physio has cleared you | AED 150 | AED 1,403 | about AED 117 |

A coach on a screen can’t spot your heaviest lift or adjust you by hand, and if you only get home from Dubai after our last slot, our hours won’t suit your evenings. If you can train at dawn, on a Friday or on a Sunday, they will. The team is led by Kumar Abhishek, a K11 School of Fitness Sciences graduate with a Diploma in Personal Training, a Human Performance Nutritionist qualification and TRX Suspension Training certification.
